Hi:

I'm sorry I can't communicate with you for the first time in person, but I am really glad you are reading this! Thanks for having an open mind!

some of the kids

I don't think I know everything about your life or school. I would never try to act like I know more about your life and your problems than you do.

What I do know about is my life. I grew up hating school and barely passed most years from first all the way to twelfth grade. But as an adult, I taught myself how to love learning again, even though I learned a lot about my own learning strengths and weaknesses while I was in college and graduate school. Then when I was a teacher and school director working in the inner city, I discovered that a lot of the ways I'd figured out to help myself learn hard things - the things I should have learned in grade school - actually helped other kids and adults who were having problems learning hard things too. They started to find that the things which used to cause them problems, were now easy.

As time went by, I discovered I had some special gift for helping people figure out how they think and learn. And I helped them feel smart and proud of themselves, not by telling them that they were smart, but because they succeeded at tasks that they used to feel were impossible them to achieve.

i knew you could do it Now I'm not saying they never felt challenged. Some things were definitely hard work for them. The big difference, though, was after we'd worked together for a little while, they found that they didn't give up so easily any more, or let themselves get blown away by feeling clueless or frustrated! They really wanted that feeling of success that only comes from achieving a goal that you have to work for!

Nate's science fair project Do you ever feel that way - playing in a team, or by yourself, skateboarding, drawing, dancing, building things, singing, anything? Doesn't it feel special? Well, I knew how important it was for people to remember how good it feels to succeed at the things they were already good at. Then I helped them get that same 'Awesome!' feeling, by teaching them how to succeed at things they never thought they were good at - usually the things related to school and learning. They were able to succeed because they knew how to find ways to learn that actually worked for them!

I might be able to help you, like I helped myself and other people who let me.
